Pea steak is a simple and delicious dish that can be prepared in many different ways. My recipe is made from green peas, feta cheese, zucchini, eggs, onions and a few other ingredients.

It is a vegetarian dish that goes very well and can easily vary the taste by changing the dry spices.

Here’s my favorite pea steak recipe that takes about an hour to make at home!

Tips for success with pea steak

Before you start the recipe, there are 3 things to think about. Read the tips below to succeed with pea steak.

In order for the ingredients to stay together, it is important to squeeze as much liquid as possible from the green peas and grated zucchini.

If you do not follow this step, there is a risk that the steaks will not stick together and fall apart during frying.

Let the dough stand and rise for 15 minutes

Another tip for fixing the pea patties is to let the dough rise for 15 minutes before shaping the patties. Breadcrumbs absorb liquid and swell, so the steaks stick together better.

Don’t turn the peas too quickly

When frying matar pakodas, do not flip them too quickly. They have to have a decent cooking surface before you can wait on them, otherwise they just fall apart.

A good and simple recipe for pea steak with feta cheese. Serve with a nice cold chutney, salad and either veggie fries, boiled potatoes, raw rice or oat rice.

  • 5 dl of thawed green peas (about 250 grams)

  • 150 g feta cheese (crushed)

  • 2 small onions

  • 1 clove of garlic

  • 1 zucchini

  • 1 first

  • 1.5 dl breadcrumbs

  • 2 tsp coriander

  • 1.5 teaspoons of salt

  • 1 teaspoon parsley

  • 1 crore of red chillies

Instructions

  1. Thaw the peas and put them in a bowl. Mash the peas by hand and then squeeze out as much liquid as possible.
  2. Wash the courgettes and grind them coarsely. Put in a colander, sprinkle 1 teaspoon of salt on top, mix and leave for 30 minutes.
  3. Finely chop the onion and garlic. Fry the onion in a small amount of olive oil until it becomes transparent. Put in a bowl with the peas.
  4. Squeeze the zucchini well (you want to get as much liquid as possible) and put it in a bowl.
  5. Add eggs, breadcrumbs, 0.5 tsp salt, paprika, coriander and parsley. Mix well by hand.
  6. Let rise for 15 minutes.
  7. Heat a frying pan with olive oil. Form 10-12 patties from the dough and fry them on medium heat (about 4-5 minutes on each side).
  8. serve immediately.

Remember not to put too much heat on the plate and don’t turn the steaks too quickly, as they can break quite easily.

8. Heat a frying pan (medium heat) with olive oil. Fry for 4-5 minutes until golden brown.

More about pea steak

Pea steak is a type of vegetable steak made from peas. I use green peas in my recipe, which give the steak a really nice flavor.

There is no standard recipe for making pea steaks, as they can be made from different ingredients. Anyway, I use crumbled feta cheese, grated zucchini, breadcrumbs, eggs, onion and dry spices to get a nice texture and flavor.

How long do peas last?

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Eat 1-2 a day.

What can you serve a pea steak with?

Pea steaks go well with many things, but I like to serve them. Oat rice, cauliflower rice or potato wedges in the oven.

Also suitable with cold chutneys, e.g. mint sauce, citrus sauce or chimichurri.
