Japanese food is incredibly good, fresh and delicious with many traditional dishes offering a unique taste experience.
Japanese cuisine is one of my favorite foods in the world because there is so much good food to eat. Below you can read more about Japanese cuisine and its traditional dishes.

Ramen is one of Japan’s most popular dishes. It’s a noodle soup made with ramen noodles, meat, vegetables and a tasty broth with nori seaweed, etc.
It is common to add chunks of meat, boiled eggs, and narutomak, a type of fish cake, to the soup before serving.
tempura
Tempura are deep-fried vegetables and seafood, usually served with rice. It’s really good and a must try in Japan.
Japanese curry
One of my personal favorite dishes in Japanese food is Japanese curry, also known as “Kare Risu” in Japan. It is a delicious and filling dish that was once introduced by the British.
The curry has a thick consistency and a slightly sweet taste. This is a very tasty dish that can be served with both meat and vegetarian dishes.
yakisoba
Yakisoba is made from fried noodles with meat, various vegetables and yakisoba sauce. This is a very nice and tasty dish.
sukiyaki
Sukiyaki is a Japanese hot pot with a broth made from soy sauce, sugar, sake and rice wine. Vegetables, meat, noodles and tofu are cooked in broth.
Sukiyaki is really good and a must try restaurant in Japan.
sushi
Sushi is probably the most famous dish in Japan. Sushi is made from sticky rice mixed with raw or cooked fish and shellfish.
Eating sushi in Japan is something special. The taste of Japanese sushi cannot be compared to Swedish or if it is prepared at home. Sushi in Japan is so incredibly fresh and delicious.
Common side dishes with sushi are pickled ginger, soy sauce and strong wasabi.
gyoza
Gyoza is a Japanese dish that I love and make at home. They are Japanese dumplings filled with pork, cabbage, mushrooms, onions and various spices.
Unlike other dumplings that are usually steamed, Gyoza is fried first to make the bottom crispy and golden brown. These dumplings are really good and full of flavor!
udon
Udons are thick, tasty noodles made from salt water and wheat flour. Noodles are generally served in various soups, but also in hot pots, and they can be fried with both meat and vegetables.
Noodle soup containing udon noodles is very popular in Japan, where the noodles are served in a fine broth with vegetables, meat and eggs.
yakitori
Yakitori is another Japanese dish that is famous all over the world. It is a dish made of chicken pieces marinated and grilled on skewers.
It’s really good, tasty and tender. Yakitori is a must taste when it comes to Japanese food.
okonomiyaki
Japanese pancake okonomiyaki is a popular street food in Japan, found in most food markets around the country. Pancakes are made from several ingredients such as cabbage, onion, shrimp, squid, vegetables and cheese.
Okonomiyaki can be prepared in many different ways from different materials according to the customer’s wishes. This is a Japanese specialty that you must try at least once in your life.
sashimi
Sashimi is finely chopped raw fish served with wasabi, pickled ginger and soy sauce. This dish is very old in Japanese history.
Fish and shellfish are most commonly served, but Japanese restaurants also offer raw beef (gyu-sashi), raw chicken (tori-zashi) and horse (bashi).
takoyaki
Another classic Japanese street food is Takoyaki. They are small balls filled with squid, topped with takoyaki sauce, mayonnaise, fish flakes (katsuobushi bonito) and seaweed (aonori).
This is a classic Japanese dish!
miso
Miso dashi is a soup made from stock and miso bean cream, to which tofu, seaweed and chopped onion are added before serving. Miso soup is delicious and easy to make, and can be served with a variety of Japanese dishes.
onigiri
Onigiri are rice balls that can be lightly grilled or served with various fillings. Common toppings for onigiri include tuna, salmon, and teriyaki chicken.
They are made into stuffed, triangular shapes and then wrapped in nori seaweed.
tonkatsu
Tonkatsu is a common dish when ordering Japanese curry. It is a breaded pork chop that is breaded and fried until golden brown and crispy on the surface.

When you are in Japan and eat local food, you can really see how passionate Japanese people are about food. This is really wonderful to see.
Common ingredients in Japanese cuisine include rice, noodles, fish, shellfish, meat, soy, seaweed, rice vinegar, sesame oil, sake, soy sauce, and local vegetables.
Many traditional dishes include fish, shellfish or meat that is either grilled or served raw. However, many dishes are vegetarian due to the country’s Buddhism.
Japanese drink
There are many drinks that can be enjoyed while traveling in Japan. Attending a tea ceremony and tasting matcha tea is a must, as well as flavored and Japanese beer.
If you like the taste of matcha, I can also recommend trying a matcha latte, which is also very easy to prepare at home.
