Burrito

A burrito is a classic Mexican dish made from a tortilla filled with beans, meat and rice.

Anyway, in American cuisine, the burrito is also loaded with ingredients like lettuce, salsa, fried onions, guacamole, cheese, and sour cream—which is really good.

Here is my favorite burrito recipe with filling tips. I usually fill my burrito with ground beef, black beans, cilantro lime rice, pico de gallo, homemade guacamole, lettuce, sour cream and shredded cheddar.

I recommend making your own pico de gallo and guacamole for the burrito. It is much tastier than prepared and is also easy to make yourself (can be prepared the same day or even a day in advance).

A good basic burrito recipe that can be varied with different fillings (more in the recipe and filling tips below).

This recipe makes about 6 servings if you serve two small burritos per serving. However, portion sizes may vary slightly depending on how many ingredients you fill your burrito with.

material

Powder:

Rice with coriander and lime

  • 4 parts long grain rice

  • 3 tbsp chopped coriander leaves

  • 2 tablespoons of butter

  • 2 tablespoons of lemon juice

Instructions

  1. Chop the onion and garlic. Fry the onions in a large frying pan in olive oil until translucent.
  2. Add minced meat and fry until fully cooked.
  3. Add spices and water. Let it boil until all the liquid has evaporated.
  4. Meanwhile, prepare the rice. Cook 4 servings of rice according to the instructions on the package (always wash the rice in cold water before cooking).
  5. When the rice is ready, add 2 tablespoons of butter and 2 tablespoons of lemon juice. Mix well.
  6. When the rice has cooled down a bit, add coriander to it.
  7. Wash the beans thoroughly in cold water and mix with the minced meat. Mix well and let it boil till the dal is hot.
  8. Place the tortilla on the kitchen table and add the rice, ground meat, lettuce, corn, pico de gallo, guacamole, sour cream and grated cheddar (don’t overfill as the burrito will be hard to roll).
  9. First fold the bottom edge of the bread and then the edges (see picture below).
  10. Roll into a burrito and cut in half with a sharp knife. serve immediately.

notes

The hardest part of this recipe is rolling the burrito. It takes a little practice to get really good at it without breaking the tortilla.

However, the burrito does not have to be rolled this way. All you have to do is fold the bread over the base and wrap the burrito around the edges.

Burritos. about

The burrito is said to have been invented by Juan Mendez, who sold tacos in a section of Juarez during the Mexican Revolution. It was in the Bella Vista neighborhood in the city of Juárez on the Mexico-US border.

He came up with an idea to keep food warm, and that was to wrap the food in a large tortilla. It quickly became a hit with the locals, and word spread throughout Mexico and even across the border into the United States.

Today, Juárez is a popular place to eat traditional burritos. The city has many popular restaurants that specialize in this dish.

Another interesting fact about the food is that the word “burrito” means “little donkey” in Spanish. Why that is a bit unclear, but it might have something to do with the burrito looking like a donkey’s ear, or the sacks that donkeys carried during that time.

Difference between Burrito in Mexico and USA

In Mexico, it is most common for a burrito to be made from a tortilla filled with beans, meat and rice. They are also much smaller in size than the United States.

In the US, a burrito is bigger and filled with more ingredients than meat, rice and beans. The rice is often seasoned with cilantro and lime, and ingredients such as guacamole, salsa, sour cream and cheese are also added.

Whether you eat the Mexican burrito or the American version, it’s delicious.

How should I store leftovers?

Since there will be a lot of food, you may have a little left over. I usually store ground meat and rice separately, but in the same airtight jar to save space in the fridge.

I cover the bowls with guacamole and pico de gallo with foil and put them in the fridge.

Eat the remaining foods in 1-2 days.

My burrito is exploding, what am I doing wrong?

One of the biggest reasons tortillas crack is because you overstuff them.

Try to buy the biggest tortillas possible. I bought the biggest ones in Santa Maria, but they are actually quite small for the number of ingredients that can fill my burrito.

Anyway, it works with that format. They just can’t be filled that much and they get smaller.

Tips for filling a burrito

Below is a list of different toppings that go well with a burrito. Just remember that the more ingredients you use, the bigger the tortilla you need.

  • spicy minced meat
  • black beans
  • fried chilies (green and red)
  • Rice (preferably with lime and coriander)
  • pico de gallo (sauce)
  • guacamole
  • sour cream
  • Fried onions or caramelized onions
  • Crispy salad
  • corncob
  • jalapenot
  • split chederstow
